One Small Step… (2005) is Guy Manning’s seventh
album, assisted here by Laura Fowles (sax, vocals), Gareth Harwood (lead
electric guitar), Ian Fairbairn (fiddle), Rick Ashton (bass), and Martin Orford
of IQ on flute, while Guy plays all manner of keyboards, guitars, and drums. His
song writing skills have reached the next level, as the folk-tinged melodies
here are instantly memorable. The long title suite is another landmark
achievement for Guy. Most of the suite is driven by acoustic guitar and shows a
strong Roy Harper influence, though the arrangement is much fuller and more
progressive, with lots of Mellotron and organ from Guy and all the other
musicians making important contributions. One has to marvel at the sheer volume
of quality music Manning is able to complete, and bemoan the fact that he’ll
probably never receive the recognition he deserves. 58-minutes. The booklet
artwork by Ed Unitsky is gorgeous.

Interviewed the good sir before and premiered the last album on the station
where I DJ.
I'm a huge fan of his music.
That being said, One Small Step is a crowning achievement for Mr. Manning,
especially the title suite (over 30 minutes in length) easily being the best
compositional work he's done to date. I'm not one for reviews, so I hope this
will suffice: If you're a fan of melodic music, composed and performed by
superior talent, I urge you to get a copy of Guy Manning's One Small Step. Guy
continues to surround himself with some of the best 'you-may-not-know-them . . .
yet' musicians. Take this one on the road, Guy. The music needs to be performed
live to as many people as possible.
